Here are a few things that make dry skin worse and how to counteract them.

1. There comes a time when we need to check the ingredients in our body wash and even the soap we wash our clothes with. These ingredients within our cleaning products can make a difference in our skin and how dry it can become.

Solution: Research clean products to stock your shower and cabinets with that allow your skin to breathe. There are body wash products that will include aloe and even oatmeal which will assist your skin to stay hydrated.

2. As we age, our skin needs more assistance to stay hydrated which means that applying extra lotion after your shower might become a necessity. Our skin thins as we age and also stops producing the proper amount of oil needed for healthy skin.

Solution: Look at aging as a beautiful transition and let that sink into your skincare routine. This means that as we age and change our skincare routine will change as well. This is perfectly normal and as long as we are aware of the changes then we can adapt before any adverse effects begin to set in such as extreme dryness of the skin.

3. A harsh reality is that that long hot shower that you’ve been looking forward to all day can actually negatively impact your skin. The heat from the shower can drain your skin from any moisture that it previously already had. Hot showers and baths can also remove important oils from your skin, which means your skin will dry out faster.

Solution: It’s highly recommended to replace those hot showers with warm short showers that are followed by lotion. This will assist the skin to keep the oils it already has and also leave you feeling warm and comforted.

A few other ways to help alleviate dry skin:

Stay hydrated! The amount of water that you are consuming is going to make or break your skincare routine. Your skin requires water to fight off dryness, which means that a great way to prevent dry skin is to drink plenty of water.

● Take your shaving routine very seriously. The act of shaving can irritate and dry your skin out when done without the proper tools. Use a quality shaving cream as well as shaving in the direction of hair growth. If you are finishing your shaving routine with a high-quality moisturizer then you will be on the road to success.

● Be aware of the product ingredients that you use! There are many products out there with ingredients that can actually dry your skin out quite quickly. Be careful when you see that your product is fragranced as it can irritate your skin.

● Check the temperature in your home. If you have the heater cranked in your home for too long then it can become a factor in your dry skin. It’s highly recommended to have a humidifier in your home to keep moisture from escaping your skin.
